All The Info You Need To Know About The Course
This course was designed to help parents by providing valuable insights so that they can better understand how to support their children. This can be a challenge for any parent as the child grows in to adolescence.
In this course, Bob Wilkie and Shawn O’Grady dive into Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The work of Abraham Maslow was groundbreaking, and some was based on his work with the Indigenous groups in Southern Alberta. His work changed how society addressed psychological issues and provided a new framework of how to heal and overcome mental health issues.
In sport, there are many new challenges that a young person and their family faces. This means that often the needs can go unfulfilled. This will trigger feelings that change behaviour.
Bob and Shawn will walk participants through the common wants of a young person, and the issues that begin when these wants are not met. It is valuable information that every parent needs to understand in order to help their child navigate the challenges in sport.
We will discuss the issues that can occur when our needs and wants go unmet and how the effects can be life-altering.

As humans we have emotions. It is these emotions that can cause confusion and pain. In this lesson Bob and Shawn shed light on what feelings are and why we as humans can struggle to express them.
As children grow and experience life they begin to experience feelings they have never felt before. This can be scary, frustrating, and confusing. They can struggle to understand why they are having these feelings and how to communicate them effectively.
Parenting is one of life’s greatest challenges and what we think we should do for our children is not always the right thing to do. This lesson will help parents to formulate new ideas of how they can help. Children need to understand why they are feeling the way they are. Not until then can they learn to manage these powerful feelings.

The second lesson in the course will discuss the basic needs we have as humans. We introduce Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, part of which was developed while he worked with the local Blackfoot and Siksika tribes in the 1960’s. In order to help teach our children to have their needs met as they go through life, we must first understand our own basic needs.
As we try to help our children grow into adults, their wants can sometimes be unrealistic, or the plan to achieve their wants may be unrealistic. This will cause issues for them.
It may be valuable to help our children through sharing our own personal experiences. It will increase understanding, it will help them to know how to communicate, and that what they are feeling is okay. Most importantly, it will help them to learn how to have their needs met, which allows for successful independence.
